“Sticks and stones…but words will never hurt me”

It’s a familiar rhyme and one that you are likely to have either imparted on your own children or had suggested to you when you were a child.

The reality is that this rhyme is so untrue because the structure of the language patterns that we use can inadvertently cause harm or indeed you can use language to “deliberately” heal. This quite literally means that how you talk to your patients is as important as what you say.

Dentist from outside Europe may have qualifications that are not recognised by the General Dental Council.  In order to work in the UK legally as a dentist you may have to sit  The Overseas Registration Examination ORE.    The ORE aims to test the clinical skills and knowledge of candidates to ensure they meet the standard expected of UK graduate dentists on their first application to the GDC. 

Dental Nursing Courses and Qualifications

As of 2008 dental nurses have to be qualified, or be currently on a course working towards, the National Certificate to legally work in the UK.  The National Certificate is a qualification recognised by the General Dental Council and provides nurses with the necessary skills to carry out all aspects of dental nursing work.

CPR, or Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is an emergency medical procedure that can be easily learnt and has the potential to save lives.   CPR is used when an individual is suffering from Cardiac Arrest or is unable to breathe.   By supplying oxygenated blood to the heart, it is possible to delay tissue death and greatly increase the victims chance of being resuscitated.

Compulsory continuing professional development CPD, is a concept brought into law by the General Dental Council.  Simply put, it states that those working in the dental industry must undergo a specific amount of professional development with in each five year period or cycle of their working life.  The exact legalities of this can be read at the government's website

This course is aimed at those who have been asigned the role of "appointed person" for first aid.   It is also suitable for residential or domiciliary care workers studying the "Skills for Care Common Induction Standards" or NVQ mandatory units in Health and Safety and would benefit Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists and all AHP staff.
