Dental Nursing Courses and Qualifications As of 2008 dental nurses have to be qualified, or be currently on a course working towards, the National Certificate to legally work in the UK. The National Certificate is a qualification recognised by the General Dental Council and provides nurses with the necessary skills to carry out all aspects of dental nursing work.
The course teaches nurses how to provide the right support to dentists, such as selecting the appropriate instruments, assisting on a wide variety of dental procedures and occasionally handling the administrative side of the business. The end goal of the course will be to provide each nurse with the skills to give their patients excellent oral health care. Typically courses will run for around 9 months with one class per week, although there is the opportunity to study more days a week and finish the course sooner. Often course are run in the evenings and weekends, enabling nurses to carry on working in full time employment.
